Album Review: Yellowcard – Lift A Sail

Yellowcard - Lift a Sail
Yellowcard – Lift a Sail

Let’s take this back to 2004, when everyone was rocking out to “Ocean Avenue” by Yellowcard. A summer anthem and song about teen love, it was the pinnacle of the band’s success. However, their latest album titled Lift a Sail may break those records.

Lift a Sail begins with a track titled “Convocation.” It is a simple two minute track with just violin instrumentals, the instrument that sets Yellowcard apart from other punk bands. The album continues with the band’s pop-rock sound in tracks like “Transmission Home” and “Make Me So,” which has a chorus that you will definitely get stuck in your head.

My personal favorite song, “Crash the Gates” incorporates a short break in the first minute of the track, which caught my attention and made me imagine how amazing it could play out in live shows. Most notably, the album also includes the band’s single, “One Bedroom”, which they have made a music video supporting the charity Invisible Children.

Another track, “MSK,” integrates the iconic sound of the violin in a short solo before the third minute. Lift a Sail also includes beautiful slow tempo songs, such as “Madrid” and the final song on the album, “California.”

I rediscovered Yellowcard when they attended The Vans Warped Tour and released their 2012 album, Southern Air. So, when I heard that they were in the studio again I could not contain my excitement. Yellowcard does not disappoint with Lift a Sail as their sound is fresh, yet sticks to the core and basis of their previous records.

Check Yellowcard out on their massive tour this fall with Memphis May Fire and Emarosa to hear Lift a Sail live!  The band will also be touring overseas in 2015.  You can see all the dates below.
