Cover albums can be a tricky feat. If the sound is too similar to the original, then it can come across as cheesy and amateur. On the other hand, if it heavily varies from the original, then it can come across as blasphemous or even malicious. But this is not the case with Seth Avett & Jessica Lea Mayfield’s cover album ( Seth Avett & Jessica Lea Mayfield Sing Elliott Smith out now on Spotify, iTunes, and more via Ramseur Records). Seth and Jessica have sewn their styles together to produce covers that give new life and soul to Elliott Smith’s emotional songs – some of which are now nearly 25 years old. Especially poignant tracks are “Let’s Get Lost”, which is featured in their promo video, and the mournful rendition of the already-heart-wrenching track “Memory Lane”.
