Brick + Mortar Live at Mississippi Studios

Brick + Mortar

Straight out of the Garden State is the infectious indie pop duo, Brick + Mortar, and they have a formula that holds tremendous weight in a world of music that is often saturated with underwhelming sounds. Founded in 2008, Brick + Mortar have tweaked and tuned their sound into a weird carnival of heart-thumping party-inducing antics that sits comfortably with hip-hop, alternative, or dance genres. Their undeniably fun shows have garnered a fair amount of attention, and has lead them to command the stage with acts such as Anthony Green (Circa Survive singer) and Jimmy Eat World, and they have participated in notorious music festivals like South By Southwest and Lollapalooza.

Brick + Mortar’s set at Mississippi Studios in Portland opened on a very quiet room. Ten minutes prior to the show’s commencement, the crowd consisted of about 15 bar patrons idly chatting away about God-knows-what. Just a few minutes before the show, the small bar’s occupancy swelled and suddenly the venue was nearly packed. The band kicked off their set with the chaotic, yet soulful track “Heatstroke”. As soon as the chorus kicked in, the patrons who were absorbed in their own worlds moments before were now fixated on the band. The song’s spellbinding sway had captured the attention of everyone in the bar. Their second song is the pioneering song “20 lb”. The more experimental aspect of this track set the theme for the rest of their set; groovy music, fun textures, jazzy-rock drums, and passion for the music being created. The third song of the set, “Keep This Place Beautiful”, was preceded by a speech about making a positive effect in the world. The set continued with engaging rhythms and interactive musical breaks. Towards the end of the set, they played their new single “Hollow Tune”, which is available now to purchase on iTunes, or to stream on Spotify. Hopefully this song is foreshadowing of a new full-length album to be released, although the band has made no mention of a new album as of yet. Currently, Brick + Mortar is touring with Vacationer.
