Finch play the Baltimore Soundstage

Finch

Finch came into Baltimore to the Baltimore Soundstage for their “Back to Oblivion” tour supporting their new album of same name, released on Sept. 30th. Opening for them was Wounds, Helen Earth Band and Maps & Atlases.

Wounds, hailing from Dublin, Ireland, set the tone for the night. With their brash sound and songs reminiscent of everything from The Stooges to Every Time I Die, they sampled their Die Young EP, which will become their first full length album, set to be released on November 24th. The band name was actually influenced by a near-death accident involving Aiden Coogans’ brother, James, who handles guitar and backup vocals. With singer Aiden Coogan screaming, along with the crowd, to “Dead Dead Fucking Dead“, everyone was in the right mindset for Finch later in the show.

Nate Barcalow later came out to a very welcoming crowd. With a sea of 10-year-old band shirts worn by long time fans, obviously the crowd was there for Finch. Opening up with “Back to Oblivion” from their new album, the fans were accepting of the new sound of Finch. But then songs from “What It Is To Burn” came through the amp and everyone lost it. Nate, R2K and the other members had the crowd jumping, moshing, screaming, plus about a hundred others verbs that would take far too long to list. It took me back to the days of early-2000s Warped Tours and the old Atticus Dragging the Lake DVDs in which R2K ended up in Fargo, ND on his birthday and spent most of the day with a Super Soaker squirting girls and claiming they were witches, demanding them to melt. Yes. It takes me back. Nostalgia.

The set continued with Finch playing everything from “Worms of the Earth” to “Post Script”. Not to forget the essentials like “Letters to You” and “Stay with Me”. A very intimate crowd, reciting every lyric in unison with Nate (myself included), absorbed every ounce of energy in Downtown Baltimore this evening. The show ended, but not without the begged-for encore of “Play Dead”, “Piece of Mind” and to seal the evening, “What It Is To Burn”.
