I just love how every band that comes to Denver now HAS to mention some sort of weed reference, like were all high or something. Well we do live at 5,280 feet above sea level so I guess we all are pretty high. The Kooks frontman Luke Pritchard strolled on to the stage with confidence (as every single girl with an X on there hand freaks) and announced how high he got today. So funny because the crowd doesn’t hesitate to approve, and of course at least five people take this as their cue to spark it up. Gotta love Colorado.
The Kooks are Brit Pop Rock to the extreme. They came out swinging with an old one – “Eddies Gun” comes off there 2006 debut release Inside In/Inside Out, which then led right into “Around Town“, the opening track off the latest full length LP Listen. This song was described by Luke as the catalyst of this album. I was really hoping they would have some scantly clad background singers live for this song but it sounded awesome regardless. I have to say, one of my favorite moments was when The Kooks played their 2014 single “Bad Habit”. I just love audience participation, the entire audience (even the “too cool” guys in the back on their cell phones) gleefully clapped the rhythm for the entire song. The newest member of The Kooks, Alexis Nunez (drums) has only had the opportunity to put his efforts in on recording Listen, but he didn’t miss a beat playing songs from all the way back to the single “Naive“, which was recorded in 2006. When Luke swooned the crowd with this jam those, now stoned, underage girls can’t help but belt out every word.
It’s kinda hard to believe Luke is almost 30 years old – he looks a lot more like a 16 year old Patrick Dempsey. He sings, dances, and immerses into every song. Seeing them live you can appreciate the effort and passion that the entire band shares. Touring is what these guys do, and good god, if you don’t believe me take a look at their upcoming dates on their website – it is insane. The Kooks only have one more week in the states then the literally will be all over the world. So go hop on a plane and visit Amsterdam (yea pot is legal there too) if you have too. Just don’t miss them live.
