Throwback Thursday: Silverchair’s “Anthem For The Year 2000”

Silverchair - Anthem For The Year 2000

Roughly twenty years ago, three teenage kids from Merewether, New South Wales, Australia made an album call Frogstomp.  Silverchair completed the recording in nine days, and the album would go on to reach the #1 spot on Australia and New Zealand charts, and sell more than 2.5 million copies worldwide.  Not bad for some 15-year-old kids.  Silverchair would go on to record 4 more albums, including Neon Ballroom, which is where we get this weeks #ThrowbackThursday choice, “Anthem For The Year 2000”.

As Frogstomp and the album’s smash hit “Tomorrow” continued to gain popularity through 1995, the group toured the US where they supported Red Hot Chili Peppers and The Ramones, and played on the roof of Radio City Music Hall at the 1995 MTV Music Awards

Released as the first single from Neon Ballroom 1999, “Anthem For The Year 2000” came just in time for the craze that preceeded the change of the millennium.  Despite the ideal timing for releasing the song, it would never reach the #1 on the Australian ARIA Singles Charts like Frogstomp‘s “Tomorrow” or Freak Show‘s “Freak“.

Although the band hasn’t been active since 2011, bass player Chris Joannou says that a reunion isn’t out of the question.  How would you feel about a Silverchair reunion?
